Conventional hydraulic brake systems provide a plurality of control valves for controlling fluid flow between a master cylinder and wheel brake cylinders of a vehicle. The control valves are typically solenoid valves having a plunger portion for controlling a flow path, the plunger portion being actuated by a solenoid that is activated by the vehicle operator. The control valves are typically spring loaded to a normally closed position. A bias force is typically provided by a pair of spaced apart spring plates mounted on the plunger. For this reason, the plunger portion is typically spring biased against a valve body portion. When the solenoid is deactivated, the spring bias force prevents fluid from flowing between the master cylinder and the wheel brake cylinders.
In recent years, a continuous flow hydraulic brake system has been proposed. In this system, a pressure relief valve is provided at the inlet to the master cylinder to relieve the system in the event of a system leak. The valve is actuated in the event of a leak to maintain a substantially constant system pressure. As with a conventional master cylinder, a master piston is moved to pressurize brake fluid for the wheel brake cylinders of the vehicle. A unique ram piston moves in a bore defined by a piston carrier to move the plunger and the control valve to an open position to permit fluid flow from the master cylinder to the wheel cylinders.
